Whether you’re drawn to black sand beaches, glacier lagoons, or moss-covered cliffs, volcanic craters, Iceland offers an unforgettable backdrop for your love story. But before you book those flights and pack your hiking boots, here are my 10 important things to know before eloping in Iceland. Don’t worry it’s not scary! (:

1. Iceland’s Weather Is Wild and Unpredictable

There is a quote in Iceland “Don’t like the weather? Just wait 5 minutes”. It can change on a drop of hat. Sunshine, wind, rain, and snow—all in one day? That’s Iceland. Be prepared to embrace the elements, dress in layers, be flexible and keep an open mind. The changing skies and moody vibes actually make for BANGING photos!

2. Timing Matters—Choose Your Season Wisely

Every season brings a different experience.

• Summer offers midnight sun, lupine blooms and a quick little Puffin check in!

• Winter brings snowy landscapes and Northern Lights and LOTS OF HOT CHOCOLATE stops! Trust me!

• Spring and autumn have fewer crowds and beautiful light, probably my favourite seasons to be honest.

Think about what kind of atmosphere and photos you want, and plan accordingly.

3. You Can Legally Marry in Iceland—or Symbolically

Iceland allows foreigners to legally marry, but you’ll need to submit documents in advance and meet specific requirements. Many couples opt for a symbolic ceremony in Iceland and handle the legal part at home—less paperwork, less stress and more flexibility!

4. Permits May Be Required

Some locations, especially national parks like Þingvellir or Vatnajökull, may require special permits for ceremonies or drone use. Work with an elopement photographer or planner who understands the process and can help you secure any needed approvals.

5. Pack Smart (and for All Weather)

You’ll need to be ready for wind, rain, uneven terrain, and cold temperatures—even in summer.
Don’t forget:

• Waterproof boots

• Layers (thermal + outer shell)

• Gloves, scarves, beanies and warm socks

• A windproof coat (even over your wedding attire)

6. Drone Photography? Know the Rules

Drone photos look amazing in Iceland, but you can’t fly everywhere. Some areas are restricted, and you’ll need to follow Icelandic aviation laws. Make sure your photographer is licensed, experienced, and flies respectfully.

While Iceland is small, driving times between epic spots can be longer than expected—especially in poor weather. Build buffer time into your schedule and don’t try to pack too much into one day. Less is often more! There is so much beauty around Iceland, we are bound to stop at few times next to the road for lupine fields, wild horses, crepes, black crust pizza and stunning backdrops! There is just SO MUCH!
