Secret & Off-the-Beaten-Path Elopement Locations in Iceland

Iceland is world famous for its iconic landscapes—think Skógafoss, Reynisfjara, and Jökulsárlón. And while these spots are breathtaking, they’re no longer secrets (seriously busy during the day). If you’re dreaming of an intimate elopement away from the crowds, Iceland is still full of hidden gems waiting to be discovered. As an elopement photographer who’s hiked, explored, and shot all over the country, here are my favourite off-the-beaten-path elopement locations that offer the same jaw-dropping backdrops without the tour buses and to be honest, a lot of these locations have actually become my favourite locations in Iceland.

1. Múlagljúfur Canyon
The Justin Bieber canyon (made famous by filing on his music videos here) Tucked in the southeast, this magical canyon is often overlooked because of its unmarked trail. It features towering cliffs, glacial rivers, and surreal views of hanging valleys. It’s quiet, dramatic, and perfect for couples looking to hike somewhere truly wild. Provides one of the most beautiful backdrops I have ever seen!

2. Háifoss Waterfall
My 2nd favourite Waterfall, it is less accessible than many waterfalls, but absolutely worth the effort. Located in the Highlands, Háifoss plunges into a deep canyon surrounded by untouched volcanic terrain. You’ll likely have the whole place to yourselves. The views from the top are absolutely insane perfect place for a ceremony and then a hike down to the bottom is a bit tough, but so so soooo worth the photos!

3. Þakgil (Thakgil)
A secluded green valley nestled between moss-covered cliffs, Þakgil feels like something out of a fantasy novel. It’s quiet, cozy, and has a peaceful energy that’s ideal for intimate vows.

4. Stokksnes Peninsula (Beyond Vestrahorn)
Most people stop for the iconic Vestrahorn shot, but if you wander further, you’ll find windswept dunes, hidden coves, and incredible light. It’s the perfect location for adventurous couples wanting that black sand magic without the rush.

5. Rauðfeldsgjá Gorge
Located on the Snæfellsnes Peninsula, this narrow gorge is easy to miss. But step inside and you’ll find a mossy, mystical world carved by water and time. It’s moody, intimate, and totally unique.

Eloping in Iceland doesn’t mean you have to follow the crowds. In fact, some of the most meaningful and magical moments happen far away from the popular tourist routes. Whether you’re hiking into a hidden canyon, standing on a windswept cliff, or saying your vows beside a secret waterfall, these off-the-beaten-path locations offer raw beauty and real privacy.
