When Is the Best Time to Elope in Iceland? A Photographer’s Guide

Choosing to elope in Iceland is already a bold and beautiful decision but now comes the next big question: When should you go? The answer is simple, ANY TIME is a GREAT TIME TO ELOPE IN ICELAND!

As a wedding photographer who has captured love stories in every season, I’m here to help you decide the best time of year to elope in Iceland, based on the kind of adventure, landscape, and lighting you’re after.

Summer (June – August): Midnight Sun & Lush Landscapes
Summer is by far the most popular time to elope in Iceland. With long daylight hours sometimes up to 24 hours of light you can plan your ceremony at “golden hour” even in the middle of the night. Waterfalls are full, the weather is mild (by Icelandic standards), and the Highlands are open for access.

It’s perfect for couples who want to explore multiple locations and don’t mind sharing a few of them with tourists. The lupine fields are in full bloom and I have to say this, THERE ARE PUFFINS! Yes I would totally plan my elopement around seeing these cute little guys waddling around on the cliffs! They are too adorable for words!

Autumn (September – October): Changing Colours & Quieter Trails
My favourite time of the year in Iceland! Early autumn brings stunning golden tones to Iceland’s mossy landscapes. The crowds begin to thin out, but weather can be unpredictable. Think cozy vibes, misty mountains, and moody skies ideal for couples chasing that raw, atmospheric look.

Winter (November – February): Northern Lights & Snowy Magic
Dreaming of eloping under the Northern Lights? Winter is your season. The landscapes are frosted in snow and waterfalls partially freeze, creating a magical, otherworldly vibe. However, daylight is limited (as little as 4–5 hours a day), and road conditions can be tricky. It’s perfect for adventurous couples who love a winter wonderland and aren’t afraid of the cold.

Spring (March – May): Ice Caves & New Beginnings
Spring is a beautiful in-between season. You might still catch some snow, but longer days are returning, and the island starts to come alive again. It’s also a great time for couples who want to experience the transition of seasons melting ice, blooming moss, and fewer tourists.
